Current Applications
X-MAT has achieved a breakthrough in materials science towards the development of high capacity anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The new X-BATT anode material fits within the current battery supply chain. The material, which has demonstrated anodic specific capacities that can yield at least a 20% improvement in total lithium-ion battery energy capacity, can be applied as a coating for natural or synthetic graphite. Visit our Batteries page for additional info.
X-MAT Coal Core Composite (CCC) Technology utilizes coal without burning the coal. Moreover, the carbon in coal is sequestered by the CCC technology. The DOE and NETL are providing $1.5M in funding through a Phase 2 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant to make commercial roof tiles (X-TILES). Visit our Roof Tiles page for additional info.
LOOKING FOR a low-cost space mirror substrate that was lightweight with exceptional thermal stability, NASA solicited proposals for an SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) grant. We created a proposal to utilize patented X-MAT® technologies to build the solution, and so began our partnership with NASA.
This project has allowed us to explore and demonstrate the far-reaching capabilities of X-MAT® technology. We developed the X-MAT® OC1 material system, with a density of 1.69 g/cc and coefficient of thermal expansion of 0.75 ppm, to meet NASA’s specific needs. Through this project, we have made enormous strides in scalability, going from a 75mm (3-inch) diameter scale factor to a 600mm (2 ft.) diameter scale factor.
We successfully produced a working prototype mirror at the end of the Phase 2 SBIR project.
AS WORLD LEADERS in electronics printing technologies, Nano Dimension creates cutting-edge heterogenous 3D printing systems. Currently only able to 3D print metals and plastics, Nano Dimension was looking to expand their capabilities into 3D printed ceramics. We partnered with them for a Space Florida grant to explore the possibilities of X-MAT®, with a focus on utilization for various applications in the aerospace industry.
3D printing is a key driver in the progress of manufacturing processes, and this project has allowed us to fully understand the extensive capabilities of X-MAT® in a 3D printing environment, and the implications our material can have in the aerospace industry.
